This beautifully preserved example features a high-grade 8-day mechanical movement with independent timekeeping, hour and half-hour strike, and alarm functions. Signed on its original porcelain enamel dial by Shreve & Co., this distinguished timepiece embodies the superior craftsmanship and timeless elegance for which fine French carriage clocks are celebrated.
Housed in an elegant silvered architectural case with fluted corner columns, stepped moldings, a richly engraved gilt dial surround, and five beveled glass panels, the clock offers beautiful views of its meticulously crafted movement from every angle. A beveled top viewing window reveals the original platform escapement in operation, one of the defining characteristics of a fine French carriage clock.
What truly distinguishes this example is its high-grade three-train movement, featuring three independently wound mechanisms dedicated to timekeeping, striking, and alarm functions. This more sophisticated configuration is less commonly encountered than standard two-train carriage clocks and reflects a higher level of mechanical craftsmanship.
The movement has been thoroughly tested and is in proper working order. It keeps accurate time, strikes correctly on the hour and half-hour, and the alarm functions as intended. The movement is exceptionally clean, reflecting decades of careful ownership and preservation.
The underside retains a handwritten inscription dated January 28, 1931. While this inscription is not believed to represent the manufacturing date, it provides a wonderful, documented ownership reference that firmly places the clock in its original period of use and adds to its historical appeal.
